A Kentucky State Police trooper was shot and a suspect killed during a police operation Sunday in Fayette County that ended at a Lexington church where multiple additional victims were found.
The incident began at 11:36 am near Blue Grass Airport, where the suspect allegedly opened fire on the trooper and fled the area, according to Kentucky State Police.
Authorities say the suspect traveled to Richmond Road Baptist Church, where the situation escalated. Law enforcement from both Kentucky State Police and the Lexington Police Department responded and secured the scene. The suspect was pronounced dead. The number and condition of victims at the church have not been disclosed, says WDRB.
Emergency medical crews were dispatched to provide treatment. The trooper who was shot is receiving medical care, KSP said.
“KSP & LPD (Lexington Police Department) were able to secure the suspect,” Kentucky State Police said in a post on X. “KSP will provide more information as it becomes available.”
In a full statement, Kentucky State Police confirmed: “Kentucky State Police is aware of a trooper-involved shooting incident that occurred on July 13, 2025, at 11:36 a.m. in Fayette County. The suspect shot a trooper and then fled the scene, ending up at the Richmond Road Baptist Church, at which time KSP and Lexington Police Department were able to secure the suspect. At this time, we can confirm that the trooper is receiving medical attention. There are multiple victims at the church, and EMS is on the scene providing care. The suspect is deceased. KSP will provide more information as it becomes available.”
