A former Democratic state lawmaker in Arizona has been found guilty on charges of sexual misconduct with a minor and will get one year in prison.

Otoniel "Tony" Navarrete was sentenced to one year in prison and 10 years of supervised release after being found guilty of having sexual conduct with a minor, per Fox 10. He was found not guilty of sexual molestation, which was one of the original charges brought.

Navarrete was arrested in 2021 on charges of sexual misconduct with a boy who he was living with. The boy accused the former state lawmaker of touching him inappropriately when he was around the age of 12 or 13.

This allegedly continued until the boy was around the age of 15. Navarrete was elected to be a state representative in Arizona’s 30th district and was then elected to state senate in 2018.

After allegations started coming out about the sexual misconduct, the democratic lawmaker resigned and then-State Rep. Raquel Terán took his place.

While Navarrete was in the state legislature, he worked on Commerce, Health and Human Services, as well as Higher Education and Workforce Development Committee assignments.

He also pushed for, as well as supported, a bill that would have school textbooks to include representations of those who identify as LGBTQ.

After the news of his sentencing broke, some on social media revealed posts he made online that featured pictures of himself and other high-level Democratic politicians. These included pictures with Vice President Kamala Harris and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

In one X post revealed by the account An Open Secret, the caption to an Instagram post from Navarrete in 2019 accused former President Donald Trump of being a leader that "spews hate and racism."
