'Failed leader' Brandon Johnson refuses to answer question about illegal alien who brutally raped 54-year-old woman on Chicago street

The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) condemned Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson for his dismissive response to a horrific sexual assault committed by an illegal alien in the sanctuary city.

During a recent press conference, when confronted with details of the attack – in which the illegal migrant allegedly grabbed a woman, bashed her head into a sidewalk, rendered her unconscious, and raped her – Mayor Johnson abruptly stated, “Let’s move on,” refusing to address concerns for his lack of support for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) intervention or deportation.

DHS characterized Johnson’s remarks as “cowardly,” writing in a post on X: “Brandon Johnson’s sanctuary city policies have made the citizens of Chicago easy targets for depraved criminal illegal aliens. President Trump and Secretary Noem are fighting for the safety of EVERY American - even when their failed leaders won’t.”

The mayor's press conference was focused on criticizing President Trump's pending deployment of the National Guard to clean up crime-ridden Chicago, as well as the ongoing violence at the Broadview ICE detention center. Johnson, a Democrat, argued that these actions were unnecessary and reaffirmed his support for sanctuary city policies. 

The horrifying incident occurred on August 31, when Leyter Jeferson Arauz-Medina, a 21-year-old criminal illegal migrant from Nicaragua, allegedly brutally raped a 54-year-old woman in Chicago’s Belmont Craven neighborhood.

According to DHS, Arauz-Medina “grabbed his victim by the hair, dragged her screaming across the street, forced her into an alleyway, threw her to the ground, strangled her, and removed all of her clothes.” From there, he bashed the victim’s skull into the ground until she was rendered unconscious, and then raped her.

The victim regained consciousness and cried out for help, which alerted a passing motorist who spooked Arauz-Medina into fleeing the scene. The naked victim took off running and sought refuge at a local food truck, where she was helped by a worker, DHS said in a press release.

ICE lodged a detainer on Arauz-Medina with the Cook County Jail on October 22. He has been held in jail without bond since September 2, records show.

Leyter Jeferson Arauz-Medina entered the US on September 17, 2024, near Eagle Pass, Texas, and was released into the country by the Biden administration. He was ordered to be removed by an immigration judge on July 17, 2024, according to DHS.

DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin slammed Democrat Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker over the attack in a press release, saying, “A real-life nightmare. This criminal, who JB Pritzker continues to protect, VICIOUSLY ATTACKED an innocent woman who was walking the streets of Chicago.”

“Governor Pritzker and his sanctuary policies protect criminal illegal alien rapists over American citizens,” she continued, adding, “We will do everything in our power to ensure this wicked criminal NEVER walks our streets again."
