Abortion advocacy group touts Stevie Nicks' abortion as career success story

“I got pregnant and it was like why? I have an IUD. I am totally protected. I have a great gynecologist. How come this has happened?”

The Center for Reproductive Rights (CRR) posted a video featuring Fleetwood Mac singer Stevie Nicks describing her abortion in the 1970s as something that allowed her career to continue without the burden of a child. The organization framed the story as an example of how abortion "allowed her to continue her career at the height of Fleetwood Mac."

In the video, Nicks recalls learning she was pregnant despite using an IUD. “I got pregnant and it was like why? I have an IUD. I am totally protected. I have a great gynecologist. How come this has happened?”

She explained that the pregnancy came as Fleetwood Mac was gaining global success, saying, “I’m like this can’t be happening. Fleetwood Mac is three years in and it’s big and we’re going into our third album. It would have destroyed Fleetwood Mac.”

Nicks said having a child at that moment “would have been a nightmare scenario.”

“I would have tried my best to get through, you know, being in the studio every single day expecting a child, but mostly having a child with Don Henley would not have gone over big in Fleetwood Mac... It would have been a nightmare scenario for me to live through.”

She went on to say she chose to speak out because “somebody has to do something” about the abortion debate.

“I have a platform. I tell a good story so maybe I should try to do something.”

In response, several commentators, including The Post Millennial's Editor in Chief Libby Emmons, posted on X, “Stevie Nicks says abortion is what made her artistic success possible, but she never dares ask or imagine how much greater it could have been if she’d said yes to love and become a mother.”

Unhumans co-author Joshua Lisec said, “‘Abortion made Stevie Nicks’ child’s life, art, and voice impossible.’”

Journalist Andy Ngo compared the CRR’s framing to “stories where human sacrifice is performed in order to be awarded with fame, fortune and material gains.”

Critics accused the group of turning Nicks’ decision into a kind of marketing campaign. Others said it reveals how deeply abortion culture has been normalized in entertainment and politics.

The Center for Reproductive Rights has not yet responded to the backlash.
