Former Senator Joe Lieberman has died at the age of 82.

According to the Washington Post, his family said the former Connecticut senator and Al Gore's vice presidential pick in 2000 died from complications from a fall.

Lieberman served 10 years in Connecticut’s state Senate from 1971 to 1981, the state’s attorney general from 1983 to 1989, and began serving in the US Senate in 1989 until his retirement in 2013.

A statement from Lieberman’s family read, "Former United States Senator Joseph I. Lieberman died this afternoon, March 27, 2024, in New York City due to complications from a fall. He was 82 years old. His beloved wife, Hadassah, and members of his family were with him as he passed. Senator Lieberman's love of God, his family, and America endured throughout his life of service in the public interest."

Lieberman also campaigned unsuccessfully for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2004, blaming the poor showing in the first nine state primaries and caucus of the election on his vote in favor of authorizing Bush to attack Iraq, according to Bloomberg.

Lieberman’s support for the Iraq War created issues for his campaign in 2006, when he was defeated in the Connecticut Democrat primary. He stayed in the race as an independent, and won another term with the help of Republican votes. Despite the support, Lieberman agreed to caucus with the Democrats, giving them a majority.

Lieberman endorsed friend John McCain for president in 2008, describing then-candidate Barack Obama as too inexperienced.

Lieberman was also a leading force in the creation of the Department of Homeland Security in 2003, and was the chairman of the renamed Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.
