Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson stated that the prisoners likely received help to carry out their escape.
According to a report by Fox News, the escapees face serious charges including murder, domestic abuse, and burglary. As of Saturday, seven of the inmates remain at large, while three have been captured as of Saturday.
Law enforcement said it has “strong” and “active” leads regarding the whereabouts of the remaining fugitives and believes some may have fled the city or even left the state. The FBI has “surged resources” to assist in the manhunt and is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for tips leading to their capture.
The fugitives still on the run are Jermaine Donald, 42, Antoine Massey, 33, Leo Tate, 31, Lenton Vanburen, 27, Derrick Groves, 27, Gary Price, 21, and Corey Boyd, 19. One escapee, 20-year-old Kendall Myles, was quickly caught after a foot chase. Myles had previously escaped from juvenile detention centers on two occasions. Late on Friday night, authorities also captured Robert Moody, 21, and Dkenan Dennis.
Those accused of murder who were on the run as of Saturday include Groves, Donald, Price, and Boyd. Others still on the run have also been charged with violent crimes.
Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson stated that the prisoners likely received help to carry out their escape.
"There's no way for anyone to get out of this facility without help from the outside," Hutson said.
The escape was discovered during a head count at 8:30 am on Friday. Authorities said the inmates broke out sometime after midnight by removing a sliding jail cell door from its track and breaching a wall behind a toilet.
Three jail employees have been suspended pending an investigation into how the escape occurred.
