A 17-year-old girl is in the hospital after being shot in the leg near Garfield High School in Seattle on Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Seattle Police Department, at approximately 2:40 pm, shots were fired from a light-colored SUV as it traveled southbound on 23rd Avenue near Garfield High School and turned onto East Jefferson Street.

Investigators said that a female juvenile at a bus stop was struck in the right leg and Seattle fire crews arrived at the scene and provided first aid.

The victim was transported to Harborview Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. She is reportedly in stable condition.

After the shots were fired, nearby schools including Garfield High School, Nova High School, and Washington Middle School sheltered in place as the scene was secured, according to KOMO News.

Police said no one else was injured in the shooting and there is "...no clear suspect information available."

In 2020, in the wake of the riots that rocked the Emerald City following the death of George Floyd, Seattle Public Schools banned police from campuses that had previously served as school resource officers to keep students safe.

Since then, there have been multiple safety incidents on Seattle public school campuses, including fights, guns on campus and another shooting.

It is not yet known what led to the shooting or if the girl was a random or specific target.

In 2023, Seattle broke its all-time homicide record previously set in 1994.
