A Winnipeg man has started a petition to make singing the national anthem mandatory before every flight within Canada.
Randolph, who is a big fan of Canada’s national anthem, is concerned that the song is disappearing from public consciousness: “We used to sing it every day before class would begin. Those days are now gone,” Randolph told the CBC earlier this week.
He argues that we’re lucky to hear the song performed at televised sporting events and aren’t being afforded enough opportunities to celebrate our national anthem. Therefore, he’s proposing legislation that would legally require ‘O Canada’ be sung before every domestic flight in Canada.
The petition currently has 900,000 signatures and is quickly moving towards Randolph’s goal. It appears that Canadians could soon be rising before their flights and joining the pilot in singing the national anthem.
