In a stunning change of events, CNN decides to actually do some legitimate reporting.

CNN’s Jake Tapper decided to take Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to task on their claims that a Koch brothers-funded study shows that universal health care would save money for the US government.

Tapper aired a segment last Friday in which he noted that the study – which was conducted by the Mercatus Center and written by senior researcher Charles Blahous – did not come to that conclusion, according to Blahous himself.

In Blahous’ own words featured in the paper’s abstract “It is likely that the actual cost of Medicare-for-all would be substantially greater than these estimates, which assume significant administrative and drug cost savings under the plan, and also assume that health care providers operating under Medicare-for-all will be reimbursed at rates more than 40 percent lower than those currently paid by private health insurance,”

Tapper made it clear that CNN was not taking a stance either way on the viability of implementing healthcare for all in the United States, rather that “it does seem pretty clear that the presentation being made by Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez about this study lacks a lot of context.”

This isn’t the first time that Ocasio-Cortez and Sanders – two self-described Democratic Socialists – have exaggerated the truth in order to enforce their ideological beliefs.

Ocasio-Cortez rose to prominence by winning New York’s 14th Congressional District and unseating incumbent congressman, Democratic Caucus Chair John Crowley earlier this year.

In the short time she’s been in the political limelight, Ocasio-Cortez has already gained a reputation for stretching the truth or outright lying. Whether it’s falsely stating that the reason unemployment is low is because everyone has two jobs, or making the misinformed claim that the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE) has a bed quota which requires the agency to fill 34,000 beds with detainees every single night, Ocasio-Cortez has shown gross negligence in the way she voices her opinions, not to mention her unfounded accusation of sexism towards her by a conservative talk show host.

Bernie Sanders – runner-up for the 2016 Democratic Nomination and independent Senator from Vermont – has also come under scrutiny for making widely inaccurate statements.

Sanders made more than a few absolutely ridiculous claims while on the 2016 campaign trail such as stating that “When you’re white, You don’t know what it’s like to be poor.”, or that “Forty percent of the guns in this country are sold without any background checks.” among many others.

Given that the midterms are in full swing, both Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez could risk hurting the Democratic Party’s chances of winning key seats in the months to come.
