The quarterfinals wrapped up today, with matches seeing England and Croatia through to the semifinals. Sweden and Russia were both eliminated.

This will only be the 3rd time that England has made it to the semifinals, the previous occasions being England 1966 and Italy 1990. This will be Croatia’s 2nd time reaching the semifinals, the other time being when they were debutants at France 1998.

Croatia and England will play in the Wednesday semifinal in Moscow, at 2pm Eastern Time

England beat Sweden for the first time at a World Cup. England were the favourites coming into the match. It was a dominant performance by England, who looked uncharacteristically comfortable. Even after taking a 2 goal lead, they did not stop getting forward and trying to get more. Jordan Pickford also pulled a few great saves to ensure England’s clean sheet. Sweden’s lack of any real attacking tactics finally caught up with them, and their lack of communication when going forward became apparent.

Harry Maguire was carded but will not be suspended.

  • SWE 0-1 ENG (30′ Maguire)
  • SWE 0-2 ENG (59′ Alli)

Croatia beat Russia for the first time at a World Cup, Croatia having been the favourites in this one. Both teams took turns being dominated, and the totally-not-doping Russians seemed to never run out of stamina. Croatia goalkeeper Subasic caused a scare by looking injured after his team had run out of substitutions, but the better team won in the end.

Dejan Lovren, Ivan Strinic, and Josip Pivaric were carded. Domagoj Vida also got himself a silly card for taking off his shirt after scoring the extra-time goal. Luckily for them, none of them will be suspended, despite the fact that 12 of their players have now been booked.

  • RUS 1-0 CRO (31′ Cheryshev)
  • RUS 1-1 CRO (39′ Kramaric)
  • RUS 1-2 CRO (101′ Vida)
  • RUS 2-2 CRO (115′ Fernandes)
  • Subasic saves (Smolov), Brozovic scores (0-1)
  • Dzagoev scores, Akinfeev saves (Kovacic) (1-1)
  • Fernandes hits wide, Modric scores (1-2)
  • Ignashevic scores, Vida scores (2-3) giving Russia a chance to lose
  • Kuzyayev scores, Rakitic scores (3-4)
