The quarterfinals kicked off today, with matches seeing France and Belgium through to the semifinals. Uruguay and Brazil, the last of the South American teams, were both eliminated.
This will only be the 2nd time that Belgium have reached the semifinals, the only previous occasion being Mexico 1986. The last time France has come this far was when they reached the Final at Germany 2006. Germany 2006 was also the last World Cup where no South American teams reached the semifinals.
France beat Uruguay for the first time at a World Cup. France were the favourites coming into the match. It will be the first semifinal since Germany 2006 for France, who were helped by a Muslera mistake in the 2nd half.
Lucas Hernandez and Kylian Mbappe were carded, but neither will be suspended.
Outright favourites Brazil fell to a shaky looking Belgium side, in an encounter that was mouthwatering on paper, but disappointing in reality. This is Belgium’s first win over Brazil at a World Cup. Both sides looked very defensively weak, and goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois gave Belgium the win. Neymar had some laughably outlandish dives, which many pundits say actually costed Brazil the game.
Toby Alderweireld and Thomas Meunier were carded, and so Meuner will be suspended for the semifinal against France.
