Part of our 2018 FIFA World Cup Hub
The Round of 16 wrapped up today. Sweden and England advanced to the quarterfinals, while Switzerland and Colombia were eliminated.
Both Sweden and England have not been at the quarterfinals of the World Cup in a long time. Sweden’s last appearance was in USA 1994, and England’s was in Germany 2006.
SWE v SUI
Switzerland failed to match their best ever performance by reaching the quarterfinals (having done so in Italy 1934, France 1938, Brazil 1950, Switzerland 1954), despite entering as favourites. Sweden was not satisfied having progressed further than expected, and will go one further to face England over the weekend.

Michael Lang was sent off for committing a foul as the last man in the 4th minute of stoppage time after the 90. The referee gave a penalty kick, but VAR review revealed that the foul was committed outside the box. The following free kick was saved by Yann Sommer, but it did not matter as the referee blew the final whistle immediately after.
Mikael Lustig will be suspended for the quarterfinal against England.
- SWE 1-0 SUI (66′ Forsberg)
COL v ENG
England won their first ever penalty shootout at the World Cup. England is traditionally famous for losing shootouts, but this was the one World Cup where you could have believed that they could win. Colombia’s best previous performance was reaching the quarterfinals in Brazil 2014, but could not match that this time around.
Jordan Henderson and Jesse Lingard were carded, but neither will be suspended.
- COL 0-1 ENG (57′ Kane penalty)
- COL 1-1 ENG (90’+3 Mina)
- Falcao scores, Kane scores (1-1)
- Cuadrado scores, Rashford scores (2-2)
- Muriel scores, Ospina saves (Henderson) (3-2)
- Uribe hits the crossbar, Trippier scores (3-3)
- Pickford saves (Bacca) giving England the chance to win, Dier scores (3-4)
