The Round of 16 continued today. Brazil and Belgium advanced to the quarterfinals, while Mexico and Japan were eliminated.

Only European and South American teams will contest the quarterfinals. The last time this happened was in Germany 2006.

Brazil and Belgium will face off in a quarterfinal on Friday the 6th, at 2pm Eastern Time, in Kazan.

Mexico hung on for the first half, but two Brazilian goals means that Brazil will be in the quarterfinals for the 7th time in a row. On the other hand, this is Mexico’s 7th straight Round of 16 elimination. Although Brazil was a formidable opponent, the Mexicans put themselves here in the bracket by losing 3-0 to Sweden in their last game. Firmino scored Neymar’s cross in the 88th minute having just come on as a substitute in the 86th minute.

Filipe Luis and Casemiro were carded. Casemiro will be suspended for the quarterfinal against Belgium.

  • BRA 1-0 MEX (51′ Neymar)
  • BRA 2-0 MEX (88′ Firmino)

After a cautious 1st half, both teams seemed to underestimate each other, as Belgium had to claw their way back after conceding a 2 goal lead in the 2nd half. Japan overcommitted in the dying moments of the game, conceding the game winner to substitute Nacer Chadli. This is the 3rd time (after Korea-Japan 2002 and South Africa 2010) that Japan have missed out on their first ever World Cup quarterfinal.

Belgium did not pick up any cards in their win.

  • BEL 0-1 JPN (48′ Haraguchi)
  • BEL 0-2 JPN (52′ Inui)
  • BEL 1-2 JPN (69′ Vertonghen)
  • BEL 2-2 JPN (74′ Fellaini)
  • BEL 3-2 JPN (90’+4 Chadli)
