After a one day break, the first day of the knock-out rounds kicked off.
France and Uruguay were the first two quarterfinalists of this World Cup, sending both Ronaldo and Messi home.
Neither Ronaldo nor Messi have ever scored in the World Cup knock-out stages, and based on their ages, they might never get another chance.
FRA v ARG
The first knock-out game of the 2018 World Cup was one for the ages. France embodied the philosophy of offence as the best defence, and made very efficient use of possession. The ball made it to the Argentine penalty area almost every time that they won possession, and toward the beginning of the game, each of those times required a tactical foul by the Argentinian defence. Argentina did seem lucky to stay in the game until the end, even taking the lead for 9 minutes, although their luck finally ran out when a last minute attempt was deflected away from net.
Kylian Mbappe became the first teenager to score a brace at the World Cup since Pele in 1958, and Didier Deschamps has become the longest-serving manager of the French national team.
Blaise Matuidi, Benjamin Pavard, and Olivier Giroud were carded. Matuidi will be suspended for the quarterfinal against Uruguay.
- FRA 1-0 ARG (13′ Griezmann penalty)
- FRA 1-1 ARG (41′ Di Maria)
- FRA 1-2 ARG (48′ Mercado)
- FRA 2-2 ARG (57′ Pavard)
- FRA 3-2 ARG (64′ Mbappe)
- FRA 4-2 ARG (68′ Mbappe)
- FRA 4-3 ARG (90’+3 Aguero)
URU v POR
Uruguay looked like the better team throughout the game, with Suarez and Cavani setting up most of the Uruguayan opportunities. Cavani was subbed off in the 74th minute seemingly injured, and it would likely be disaster for the team if he misses the next match. Uruguay conceded their first goal of the tournament when Pepe scored Portugal’s equalizer.
Uruguay did not pick up any cards in their win.
- URU 1-0 POR (7′ Cavani)
- URU 1-1 POR (55′ Pepe)
- URU 2-1 POR (62′ Cavani)
