Groups A and B wrapped up.
Uruguay and Spain were group winners, while Russia and Portugal were group runners-up.
Uruguay will face Portugal (Saturday, June 30), and Spain will face Russia (Sunday, July 1).
URU v RUS
Russia only needed a draw, but will at least go through as group runners up. Uruguay had a shaky start but concluded the group stage with 9 points. This is not Uruguay’s first time beating a World Cup host 3-0 in the group stage, as they did the same in South Africa 2010.
Elsewhere, Saudi Arabia beat Egypt 2-1.
Rodrigo Bentancur, Yury Gazinsky, and Igor Smilnikov were carded. Smolnikov was sent off after a second yellow and will be suspended for the match against Spain.
- URU 1-0 RUS (10′ Suarez)
- URU 2-0 RUS (23′ Cheryshev own goal)
- URU 3-0 RUS (90′ Cavani)
IRN v POR
A last minute penalty let Iran win another point, but it was not enough for them to advance. Their goal did prevent Portugal from winning the group. Portugal cannot have too many complaints, as Ronaldo failed to convert a penalty in the 53rd minute. Another Iranian goal would have sent Iran through at Portugal’s expense.
Raphael Guerreiro, Ricardo Quaresma, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Cedric were carded, but none will be suspended for Portugal’s match against Uruguay.
- IRN 0-1 POR (45′ Quaresma)
- IRN 0-1 POR (53′ Ronaldo missed penalty)
- IRN 1-1 POR (90’+3 Ansarifard penalty)
ESP v mar
Uzbek referee Ravshan Irmatov extended his record for most World Cup matches officiated (11). 2010 champions had to equalize twice in order to win the group, although they would have been 2nd if Portugal and Iran did not tie. Had Spain not scored, they would have been outright eliminated based on results elsewhere. Morocco had already been eliminated before the match.
None of the Spanish players were carded.
- ESP 0-1 mar (14′ Boutaib)
- ESP 1-1 mar (19′ Isco)
- ESP 1-2 mar (81′ En-Nesyri)
- ESP 2-2 mar (90’+1 Aspas)
