Previewing the World Cup Final

Part of our 2018 FIFA World Cup Hub

The Big One is here. The World Cup Final, the world’s most watched sporting match will kick-off on Sunday at 11pm Eastern Time.

This will be France’s 2nd Final, the first time being when they won the World Cup at home in 1998.

This will be Croatia’s first Final, their best performance having been at France 1998, where they famously came 3rd, after beating Germany 3-0 in the quarterfinals. Croatia became independent country after a war for independence which lasted until 1995, just 3 years before that World Cup.

FRA v CRO

Croatia will be looking for revenge, their first meeting with France having been against the hosts at the 1998 World Cup in the semifinals. France won 2-1 and went to the Final (where they beat Brazil). Croatia bounced back, snatching the bronze medals from the Netherlands.

They met again in Portugal for a Group Stage match at Euro 2004, which ended in a 2-2 draw. Croatia were eliminated, while France were eliminated by Greece in the next round.

Their last meeting was in a 2011 friendly, in France, which ended scoreless.

This will be their 2nd meeting at a World Cup, and will be even more important than the last. France will be 2:1 favourites to win.

France to Win: 66.6%

Croatia to Win: 33.4%

Grades

France: A

  • Will go up to A+ with a win by 1 or more goals
  • Will not go down even with a loss by 5 goals

Croatia: A-

  • Will go up to A with a win by 1 or more goals
  • Will not go down even with a loss by 5 goals
Upsets

This match will be considered the 3rd biggest upset in World Cup history if Croatia wins by 5 goals. Korea’s 2-0 win over Germany is currently the 4th biggest. It would be the 6th biggest if Croatia wins by 3 or 4 goals.

It would also be considered the 6th all-time biggest upset in international soccer if Croatia wins by 5 goals. Korea’s 2-0 win over Germany is currently 7th.
