The Round of 16 of the world’s biggest sporting event continues tomorrow, with games starting at 10am and 2pm.

Colombia would match their best performance by reaching the quarterfinals for the 2nd time, after Brazil 2014.

The two winners will play each other in a quarterfinal on Saturday, July 7.

Sweden will face Switzerland. Sweden were runners-up in Sweden 1958. Switzerland reached the last 8 in Italy 1934, France 1938, Brazil 1950, and Switzerland 1954. Sweden failed to qualify for the last two World Cups, while Switzerland were eliminated in the Round of 16.

These sides first met in a 1920 friendly in Sweden, where the Swiss won 1-0.

They also met in qualifying for Chile 1962. Sweden won their home leg 4-0, and Switzerland won their home leg 3-2. They had a play-off in Germany, which Switzerland won 2-1. Sweden thus failed to qualify, and Switzerland were eliminated in the first round.

They met again in qualifying for Argentina 1978. Sweden won both legs 2-1. Switzerland thus failed to qualify, and Sweden were eliminated in the first round.

They met once again to qualify for Euro 1988. Sweden won their home leg 2-0, and Switzerland drew 1-1 in their home leg. Both teams would fail to qualify.

They met again to qualify for Euro 1996. Switzerland won their home leg 4-2, and the other leg ended in a scoreless draw. Sweden would fail to qualify. Switzerland were eliminated in the first round of Euro 1996 in England.

The two sides have not met in a long time, last meeting in a 2002 friendly in Sweden, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

They will be happy to see each other for their 1st meeting at the World Cup, both teams facing long odds of making it to the semifinals. Whoever advances will consider themselves very fortunate to be in the last eight. It will virtually be a toss-up.
