Petition Against “Sharia Law” Reaches nearly 60,000 Signatures

E-909 becomes one of the most widely-signed petitions to the government.

A petition by James Bezan against Sharia law by the Conservative MP for Selkirk-Interlake-Eastman, Manitoba reached over 57,000 signatures on the Canadian Commons website, making it the second most signed petition on the Canadian commons site in the 2016-2017 period.

The Petition States:

  • Differential justice based on an individual’s religion is prejudicial and preferential, therefore, an amendment to the Constitution Act of 1982 would ease the minds of all Canadians and ensure equal treatment for everyone under the Criminal Code of Canada.
  • We, the undersigned, citizens of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to propose an amendment to the Constitution Act of 1982, under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, stating that Sharia Law or separate Sharia family courts will never have a place in the Canadian Justice System.

Tough Conversation

Regardless of your political views, this petition says a lot. It shows that there is a real fear within Canadian circles in regards to Sharia law and it shows that our current view of simply not discussing the topic is not working. In fact, it is most likely allowing this discussion to occur in closed rooms, without debate or interaction.

Context: In fact, the only other petition to have reached more people was one by NDP MP Nathan Cullen which spoke against the Liberal government’s decision to drop electoral reform.
