A new report out from Abacus data asking Canadians about their hopes and expectations for the new year shows a number of interesting stats about everything from the Leaf's cup chances all the way to Donald Trump and Brexit.

No love for Trump

A remarkable 80% of Canadians would like to see Donald Trump leave the office of President this year.

This attitude is consistent across party and regional lines with 70% of Albertans and 67% of current CPC voters stating their preference for Trump's departure in 2019.

However, only 41% of Canadians think that President Trump will be leaving office this year.

Support for TMX pipeline

In regards to the Trans Mountain pipeline, purchased by the Trudeau government on behalf of Canadians for $4.5 billion in May of 2018, 64% of Canadians would like to see it built this year.

However, when asked if they thought the construction of the pipeline would actually happen in 2019, only 56% said yes.

Looking at the regional breakdown, support for the construction of TMX is at 60% in B.C., 87% in Alberta, 70% in Ontario, but only 41% in Quebec.

Climate change and fossil fuels

Another point of significant consensus for Canadians was in the area of climate change and the need for a technological breakthrough to help mitigate its effects.

Almost all Canadians, 90%, hope there will be a scientific or technological breakthrough that can accelerate progress in the fight against climate change in 2019.

In a similar vein, 87% would like to see a technological breakthrough that allows for the transition away from fossil fuels and towards renewable energy.

Even in oil rich Alberta, the numbers are still quite high on these two points with 87% hoping for a scientific discovery to help speed up the fight against climate change and 76% hoping for the same in the area of fossil fuels.

Brexit and the Monarchy

When polled about Brexit, only 30% of Canadians said they would like to see Britain leave the EU in 2019. However, a majority, 55%, believe it will happen regardless.

Another interesting U.K. related stat to come out of this poll - 39% of Canadians would like to see Prince Charles become King this year while 36% think it will actually happen.

Leaf's Cup chances

On the topic of hockey, 59% of Canadians would like to see the Leafs win the Stanley Cup this year. This hope is especially high in Ontario with 79% hoping the Leafs can go all the way this season.

However, people aren't to optimistic about their chances with only 28% of Canadians believing the Leafs will capture the Cup in 2019.

Of particular note, despite a great season so far, a substantial 65% of Ontarians do not believe the Leafs will win the Cup this year.

Support for Scheer

Finally, as Canada enters an election year, support for Conservative leader Andrew Scheer becoming Prime Minister sits at 40%.

A smaller number of Canadians think this will happen however, with only 35% thinking the 2019 election will result in a Prime Minister Scheer.

Similar support is found amongst Canadians in regards to the election of right-wing governments, with 4 in 10 saying they would like so see more right wing governments elected around the world.

A slightly higher percentage of Canadians believe this will happen with 49% saying 2019 will be the year where more right-wing governments are elected.
