Canadians will be able to identify as gender-neutral "X" on their passports starting Tuesday.

The change of status will be free for one year.

According to the CBC, Minister Hussen said, "non-binary people have always been part of our community. Submitting an identification document that does not accurately reflect a gender, gender, orientation or expression can trigger stigma, discrimination and sometimes violence"

Canada became the first country in the Americas to allow its citizens to not identify as male or female on their passports in 2017.

Outside of the Americas nations like Australia, Denmark, Germany, Malta, New Zealand, Pakistan, India, Ireland and Nepal all provide some kind of third-option.
