Just before Passover, a restaurant in Winnipeg was spray-painted with hate speech and anti-Semitic graffiti. It's just another example of the kind of hate crime that's threatening our democracy.

Except it was all allegedly fake.

The three owners of the BerMax Café have been arrested and charged with mischief after they allegedly staged the whole thing.

According to CBC, Winnipeg Police responded to a report of an assault on a woman as well as the anti-Semitic vandalism last Thursday. Both were staged.

Chief Danny Smyth told CBC the incident was assault was staged. "The anti-Semitic graffiti and vandalism were also falsely reported as being done by outside suspects," Smyth added.

Alexander Berent, 56, Oxana Berent, 48, and Maxim Berent, 29, are set to appear in court in May.
