While the mainstream media continues to opine that former ISIS brides are “young” and “naïve” mothers, who are now very remorseful, it is important to note what they took part of in Iraq and Syria.
The media would have you believe that in some ways these women are the true victims, since they were not part of the fighting. It is not like they did anything horrible like putting on a red MAGA hat. However, there is one part of ISIS that many jihadi brides did play a major role in: the sexual slave trade of Yazidi girls.
ISIS has committed many atrocities in the name of their extremist Islamist ideology. Perhaps none are more depraved than the widespread sexual slavery of the Yazidi women and girls. This time, a girl as young as 10 was gang-raped, impregnated, and is now missing.
According to her aunt, Marwa was taken into sexual slavery when she was 10 when ISIS took over the Sinjar region in Iraq in 2014. She is now pregnant and missing.
This comes off the news from the British SAS who just found the severed heads of 50 Yazidi sex slaves in Syria.
According to a fundamentalist interpretation of Islam this is a sanctioned practice and these Jihadi brides took an active role in it.
It was common for ISIS brides to beat the disobedient sex slaves of their husbands and help them sell them from owner to owner, where they were raped repeatedly and brutally.
The media however, would like to gloss over this fact. Instead we have been treated to more quasi sympathetic stories of Jihadi brides (or remorseful mothers) in the past week, than we have seen articles about the plight of the Yazidis since the genocide of their people began.
Whether these stories are a warped expression of morality, where the media can show their extreme capacity of tolerance and forgiveness, or maybe they just want to stick it to the evil anti-ISIS conservatives, perhaps the stories just get clicks.
Either way, one thing is certain. Many women were active and willing participants in evil, and whitewashing this fact is another form of evil.
Luckily, we do have groups in Canada who have been trying to support the Yazidi people like Project Abraham. Unfortunately, we also have groups that support the idea of sexual slavery in this country.
It is a shame that most people can guess which group has more money and followers.
