One of the Border Patrol agents who was falsely accused of whipping illegal immigrants at the US southern border in Texas has received an achievement award from Biden's US Customs and Border Protection.

He was honored on Thursday for his intelligence work on human smuggling cases, as reported by the New York Post. The agent's name has been withheld since the September 2021 incident to protect his identity.

The award was given by the same government that falsely accused the border agent of whipping Haitian migrants on horseback, a viral incident that received strong condemnation from President Biden, in which the president vowed to make the agents involved "pay" for their crimes.

A comprehensive internal investigation conducted by the CBP determined that no Haitians were injured during the altercation and that the agents had not used whips or struck anyone with the reins of their horses.

The investigation said it found, however, that the agents had used "unnecessary" force against the illegal immigrants, with one agent having at the time used "unsafe" horsemanship and "denigrating and inappropriate language."

A source within the Department of Homeland Security told NYP:  "I find it hilarious and ridiculous that almost three years later, a Border Patrol agent who was accused of being racist and so vilified by this Biden administration now wins an achievement award for his efforts in preventing smuggling before he gets a public apology."

Alejandro Mayorkas, Secretary of DHS, was forced to walk back claims after he harshly criticized the border agents involved in the incident during a White House press briefing.

Video footage and photographs went viral on social media which showed Border Patrol agents on horseback attempting to contain a mass invasion of Haitians who had just illegally entered through the US-Mexico border in Texas.

Photographs captured border agents holding horse reins while trying to capture the illegal immigrants. The agents were then falsely accused of whipping the Haitians, which reportedly did not happen. No photos produced showed agents making contact with the bodies of any illegal immigrants with their horse reins.

"I made the statements without having seen the images," said Mayorkas in Sept. 2021.

"The horses have long reins, and the image in the photograph that we all saw, and that horrified the nation, raised serious questions about what … occurred and as I stated quite clearly, it conjured up images of what has occurred in the past," he added, referring to slavery.

The agents were prohibited from engaging with illegal immigrants and were taken off the front lines of the southern border after the incident.

The agent who was recognized by his superiors on Thursday was reassigned to work intelligence on cases involving smuggling.
